Aunt Carrie's Restaurant, Ice Cream and Gift Shoppe: Reviews & Ratings
What can I say. Classic Rhode Island eatery. Real New England vibe here. Great food and awesome ice cream across the street. The kids got a free ice cream with a kids meal too. The steamers were the best I've ever had.
My father passed away in August and he had recently suggested to us that we should visit. After we laid him to rest, all four of his children with partners and four grandchildren headed to this restaurant in his honor. We were not blown away by the food, service, or atmosphere. It was nice to be by the beach and have plenty of space for all 11 of us to dine together. We walked across the street for ice cream after. That was tasty.
Best clam cakes. Best traditional lobster roll. Great fried calamari. Local “do not miss it you’ll be sorry” place. Eat in & take out both great.
Aunt Carrie’s has been around for years, their food used to be the best around. The food has become average because of tourists season. Their homemade bread and calamari were the best thing we ate that day. They have indoor seating but no Air conditioning.
Bottom line: The best place for New England style seafood. I first went to Aunt Carrie's in 1978. Mom and Dad had had a miserable dinner at the lighthouse restaurant, when a passing local heard them talking about the experience. "You should go to Aunt Carrie's," the local interjected, and struck up a conversation. I will forever be grateful for that bit of unsolicited advice. In the years since, Aunt Carrie's has sustained its level of excellence. The atmosphere is exceedingly casual, as is fitting for a beachside restaurant. The servers may be inexperienced, but they're always hardworking and helpful. We once showed up five minutes before closing, with the only other diners wrapping up their meals, and a server cheerfully welcomed us in and gave absolutely no vibe that our late attendance was an imposition on the staff. The food is the best representation of Rhode Island's take on New England seafood. That is, if fried seafood is what you want, you're going to be very happy. I prefer the fried whole belly clams. The clam cakes, a Rhode Island specialty, are excellent. Don't expect a "clam cake" to be like a "crab cake." Clam cakes are primarily fried dough fritters, with little bits of clam in them for flavor and texture. The chowder is amazing, and served either traditional Rhode Island style with a clear broth, or with a touch of milk added. I'm led to believe you can even have it served with a tomato broth, but I've never ventured to confirm such a culinary tragedy is printed on the menu for anything more than comic value. (Note: Traditional clam chowder in New England is not thick, and that's a sad trend soup companies and restaurants outside the region have pushed. If you like your clam chowder "thick and creamy," you're going to be disappointed and would be better served by going to the grocery store for some Campbell's.) Other solid dishes include their steamers and lobster rolls. It's so hard to choose! Go to Aunt Carrie's if you want a particular type of cuisine executed with the highest quality.
Visiting this restaurant was a first for me. When my husband and I showed up for lunch we were surprised to find easy and accessible parking. When we went in we were greeted by a very friendly young woman at the counter who seated us promptly. Our server was Matthew and he was wonderful. He was attentive and made sure my husband and I were happy. The food was wonderful and the service was just as good. The setting and atmosphere were very enjoyable as well. I would happily come back because the meal and service were so enjoyable. You have a wonderful server in Matt and I hope he sticks around for awhile.
In search of amazing balls??!!! And amazing chowder too??!!!! Well, at Aunt Carrie's, you have found Heaven on Earth!!! I couldn't contain the smile on my face as my girlfriend exclaimed " Oh my God, these balls are huge" as she opened the bag of 1/2 dozen clam cakes we had ordered with a bowl of chowder, white, the best, of course, and a house pale ale. The clam cakes were marvelous. Perhaps the best in all the land. Perfectly crisp, a marvelous cake-like dough that had the most amazing lightness and superior delicate mouth feel, filled with giant clams. The chowder was a perfect balance of creaminess, potato and clam balance to please the senses and satisfy the soul. Perfection!!
Clams were plentiful. Clam chowder was delicious. It could’ve had a few more clams as it was mostly potatoes. The lobster was tender, moist and delicious and for dessert we had blueberry pie. The pie is pretty much out of this world with very tiny blueberries but packed with flavor. I can’t wait to come back.
